How an art nude photo session actually works in Mexico City

david rivera · fanatia · mexico city

Most of the people who find FANATIA from outside Mexico arrive through a search for Mexican models and land on a gallery. This page is the part that a gallery can’t show: how the work is made — who the models are, what gets agreed before anyone undresses, and what decides which fourteen images out of hundreds end up published.

I’m writing it because “real photography” is an easy claim to make and a hard one to prove, and because the difference between an archive and a pile of pictures is exactly this process.

Who the models are

Every real model in the archive is an adult with verified identity. Most come through the open casting, which is for women aged 18 to 25 in Mexico City with no experience required — the studio provides production and direction. Some are professional models, like Lia Hancock; some are not, like Angélica, whose series is built entirely on direction.

Nobody is scraped, imported from another platform or assembled from social media profiles. If a person is in this archive, she sat for the session and signed for its publication.

Before: the limits are written down

The scope of a series — wardrobe, whether it includes lingerie or nude, what gets published and where — is agreed in writing before the first light is switched on. Identity is checked against an official ID. The model keeps a signed copy.

The rule that matters most: the written scope is a ceiling, not a floor. It can always be lowered during the session. It is never pushed up on set.

During: the session starts clothed

A session doesn’t decide in advance how much will be shown. It starts with a portrait, clothed, and the level of exposure moves during the work according to what the model decides — not according to what the photographer manages to get. The first twenty frames are warm-up and almost never used.

Direction is the actual job. Where the hand goes, how the shoulder turns, when to breathe, when to let the face go. A model who is uncomfortable looks uncomfortable in every frame, and that is the photographer’s failure for not having asked. I’ve written (in Spanish) about why this moment — what happens in-camera, before any editing — is the only part of photography that AI has not made cheap.

After: selection, editing, publication

Hundreds of frames become a series of a dozen or so, selected on editorial criteria: light, composition, the sequence from portrait to figure. Editing is real editing — light, skin, background — and when AI tools are used for it, the image is still a photograph and it’s labeled as edited. No poses, bodies or nudity are generated that the model didn’t do.

Publication follows the agreement: which images, which channels. A model can ask for anonymity, and that is a formal decision rather than a compromise — Lilith’s series never shows her face and is stronger for it. Images in the private collection carry an invisible per-member watermark, so a leaked image can be traced to the account it came from.

Two lanes: photography and AI

FANATIA also makes fully generated images with AI. They are a separate lane, always marked with ◈, built from fictional adult characters and never from a real person’s face. An edited photograph is still a photograph; a generated image is not, and it never gets passed off as one. When you’re looking at a page here, the label tells you which lane you’re in.

How to follow the work from outside Mexico

The archive — every real photograph in one grid — is free and needs no account. Series 01 is the door. If you want the full series, the backstage and the galleries that haven’t shipped, that’s what the membership is for: a flat monthly fee that funds the next sessions. The English entry point to the whole site is /en/.

Questions

Are the models real people?

Yes. Every real model is an adult with verified identity and a signed image release. Generated characters exist in a separate lane and are always marked with ◈.

Is the gallery really free?

Series 01 (Lia Hancock, 14 photographs) and the public archive are free and need no account. The membership is optional and funds the work.

Can I book a session?

Private boudoir sessions are offered in Mexico City for anyone over 18; the person photographed decides the level of nudity and how the images are used. Details (in Spanish) are on the private sessions page.

Do you sell individual photos or prints?

No. The membership gives access to the collection; nothing is sold as loose files.

How is a leaked image traced?

Images served to members carry an invisible watermark tied to the account. It survives re-compression, resizing and cropping, and identifies the account an image came from.
